Good lawns are very ideal for every modern home. All lawns just like other plants, need water to live and grow. The amount of water required will mostly depend on the grass planted and also the weather season. The Bermuda, St. Augustine and buffalo are most commonly used types of grasses.
These types of grasses require less watering as compared to the Kentucky blue grass which requires frequent watering. The weather season might also determine the amount of water used on the lawn. The lawn is mostly dry if not watered well because of the high rate of evaporation during the summer season. This means that a lot of deep watering or irrigation is necessary during the hot summer season.
The winter season on the other hand allows the ground or the lawn to maintain its moisture. This is because the cool temperatures do not favor the high rate of evaporation. Another way to ensure the grass grows well is by applying fertilizers on the lawn. Like watering, fertilizing also depends on the weather season and the type of grass planted. The type of grass which is fertilized during the summer season include the Bermuda and the buffalo.
Some of the grasses which are referred to as the cold season grasses like the Kentucky blue grass are fertilized during the winter season. Fertilizers contain essential additives and nutrients for the plants and they include potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. Mixing of bone meal, coffee grounds and wood ashes can also be used as a type of fertilizer for the lawn instead of buying fertilizers. Another recipe of making home-made fertilizer include mouthwash, beer, ammonia and Epsom salts.
Lawn care also involves regular weeding of the grass. Weeds do not grow well in areas with tall grasses thus it is important to let the grass grow for a height of more than three inches. Vinegar is very strong and does not harm the grass so it is also a good and effective way to control the weeds in your lawn. Other than vinegar, you can also use the following methods to get rid of weeds in your lawn; using herbicides to kill the weeds, laying mulch and also pulling the weed out. Pests in the lawn can be eliminated by using pesticides. The common pests found in the lawn are slugs, insects and snails. You can also save a lot of money used for buying pesticides and hiring professionals by simply cleaning the lawn. Lawn care also involves mowing the grass to make it thicker.
